It has been known for centuries that Elderberry Syrup is a beneficial flu and cold remedy (an immune booster), but it wasn’t until I did more research that I realized it truly is a marvelous berry! Not only does it boost your immune system with Vitamins and Minerals, it can also reduce flu or cold symptoms, including respiratory transmissions. How amazing is that!

After reading these benefits, I decided to make my own syrup. The pre-made syrup is extremely expensive, but it is a rather easy process to make at home. I used this recipe from Wellness Mama as a basic foundation, but changed a few of the ingredient amounts to fit our family’s preferences.
3½ cups water
2/3 cup dried elderberries (I purchased my bag from Azure Standard)
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
3/4 cup raw honey
In a saucepan, bring to a boil the water, elderberries, cinnamon, and cloves. Once a boil is reached, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 40-60 minutes. (Mine simmers for about 40 minutes.) The original liquid should reduce to half, so watch closely. Occasionally stir.
After the lengthy simmer time, remove the saucepan from the stove and let it cool. Mash the berries with a spoon or muddler. Strain the mushed berries and discard. There shouldn’t be any large chunks of berries – if there are, restrain. Add the honey to the liquid and slowly mix until it is well-blended.
Pour the finished mixture into a glass jar and you are finished!
Wellness Mama states “Standard dose is ½ – 1 teaspoon for kids and ½ – 1 tablespoon for adults. If the flu does strike, take the normal dose every 2-3 hours instead of once a day until symptoms disappear.”
